When Colombian Engineer Pedro (36) decided to move to the Netherlands with his family, he knew it would be a major life decision. Today, he works as a Devops Engineer on a project at Rabobank through Wypoon and reflects on his journey:

“It was a huge step for me and my family, but it was absolutely worth it. I’ve grown professionally, personally, and as a father. This experience changed my mindset in so many ways.”

"The Netherlands is one of the best countries in the world to live in, and after two years I can fully agree with that."

Pedro lives in Oosterhout with his wife and three children. He initially moved to Breda but later upgraded to a house in a family-friendly neighborhood. Way bigger, and for the same price since it’s smaller village next to the city center of Breda. He works one day per week at Rabobank in Utrecht.

“This was a family project for us. We always wanted to experience life outside Colombia and give our children the opportunity to grow. The Netherlands is one of the best countries in the world to live in, and after two years I can fully agree with that. Professionally, I also wanted the chance to grow in a large international company.”

"Wypoon's help really turned what could have been a complex process into something smooth and manageable.”

“They helped me from day one. They guided me through the visa process, paperwork, and even helped me find housing. Every step was clear and organized. Having that kind of support made a huge difference. It really turned what could have been a complex process into something manageable.

The waiting period was hard, especially the three months I spent alone before my family joined me. But Wypoon took care of everything, from temporary housing to permanent accommodation and legal paperwork. That level of support was essential.”

“I became more independent, learned to solve things on my own, and I appreciate everyday moments more than ever.”

This experience helped me grow in every way: professionally, personally, and as a father. I became more independent, learned to solve things on my own, and I appreciate everyday moments more than ever. My  mindset has changed, and I’m more open to different perspectives.”

What are the biggest differences you notice between Colombia and the Netherlands?

Professionally: “Work-life balance is really respected here. People manage their time responsibly and value family life. That is very different from what I was used to.”

Personally: “Communication is very direct, punctuality is respected, and everything is planned well in advance, from school calendars to appointments. The Netherlands feels calmer; people aren’t constantly under pressure. My wife finds the weather challenging, but I actually enjoy it. It’s a calmer environment where you can enjoy time with friends and family.”

Advice for future expats: "Prepare as much as you can and get support from a company that knows the process."

Prepare as much as you can and get support from a company that knows the process. And don’t be afraid. it’s a big decision, but the best things in life happen outside your comfort zone. Take that first step. It was challenging at first, being separated for three monthsand I worried about how my kids would adjust. But  they learned Dutch quickly, made friends, and seeing them happy and bilingual has been incredibly rewarding.”

What Pedro would put on a Dutch Tile?

You arrive for the job, but stay for the lifestyle. That’s exactly how it felt for me. I came to the Netherlands for a professional opportunity, but what I found was so much more: balance, stability, and a better future for my family. It’s in the small things like having time for your children and enjoying calm weekends. If you’re considering this step, know that it might start with your career, but it can truly transform your whole way of living.”
