Kerem from Turkey: “You rebuild your whole daily life from scratch.”

A new role in Amsterdam

Kerem is originally from Turkey and has been working in data science and AI engineering for more than ten years. He studied Computer Engineering and later completed a Master’s in Big Data Analytics.

Today, he works as an AI Engineer at ABN AMRO, where he is part of a team building an internal platform for AI agents.

Before coming to the Netherlands, Kerem tried to prepare as much as possible.

“I read a lot about housing and the 30% ruling, talked to friends who had already made the move, and tried to get my paperwork in order before landing.”

Preparing for the move

Once his position at ABN AMRO was confirmed, Wypoon started arranging the relocation process.

“Wypoon asked for the documents they needed and took it from there. After that I basically didn’t have to do anything. I just showed up wherever I needed to be in person, and everything else was handled quickly in the background.”

His apartment was already arranged before he arrived in the Netherlands. On his arrival day, a colleague from Wypoon picked him up and accompanied him to the municipality for the first registration steps. Afterwards, he was taken to the apartment that had already been arranged for him.

Having these practical things arranged helped make his first days in the Netherlands easier.

Building a new daily life

Moving abroad is not only about starting a new job and arranging paperwork. There is also the personal side of getting used to a new country and building a new routine.

“It’s a bigger adjustment than you expect, even when the job goes well. You rebuild your whole daily life from scratch.”

For Kerem, the experience has also made him more independent.

“It made me more independent and a lot more comfortable with uncertainty.”

There are also some parts of Dutch life he quickly started to enjoy, especially as a runner.

“As a runner, the Netherlands spoils you. Flat roads everywhere, far fewer people in your way, and rain you just learn to run in.”

Kerem’s advice for moving to the Netherlands

For anyone considering a similar move, Kerem recommends starting with one of the biggest challenges in the Netherlands: housing.

“Start the housing search earlier than you think you need to.”

He also recommends learning some Dutch, even though it is easy to get by with English.

“Learn some Dutch even though everyone speaks English. It changes how people treat you.”

Settling into the Netherlands

One thing Kerem appreciates about living in the Netherlands is its international environment.

“The Netherlands is a good place to live as an expat because it’s genuinely multicultural. You’re never the only foreigner in the room, and that makes settling in much easier.”

He also feels that having support with the practical side of relocation made a big difference.

“The part that usually makes moving abroad hard, all the processes and paperwork, you don’t have to manage yourself. Wypoon does it for you.”

For Kerem, moving to the Netherlands has meant a new job, a new home and a completely new daily routine. Now he is settling into life here, getting to know the country and, like many people in the Netherlands, learning not to let a bit of rain change his plans.
