Yago had made no preparations for his move. He simply stuffed some clothes into a suitcase and went. “I just got in the plane.” Yago remembers. “I didn’t even think much about it. I didn’t really have a logistic plan. I didn’t even know exactly where I was going to live when I moved.”;

Despite the lack of preparation, Yago found the migration process to be quite easy because of Wypoon’s assistance. “When I relocated everything was moving accordingly.” Yago remarked of his move. “I had the help from Sammi, the HR manager. She really helped with me a lot; like everything I needed. She was there to help me with any doubts, with any problems I had. When I first arrived in the Netherlands at the hotel, she made sure everything was good. She was probably tracking my flight. She was giving me all the support.” Moreover, Yago mentioned that “They [Wypoon] helped me with all documentation and they helped with me finding a place here. Wypoon also helped me financially to pay for my deposit when I moved here. They also have some nice team meetings to have some fun in parks!”.

Yago eventually relocated to Amsterdam, a city noted for its multicultural population. So far, Yago has had little difficulty assimilating into his new city and culture. “I live in Amsterdam.” Yago says of his new location. “It’s a very international city, so I think they [Amsterdam’ers] are used to welcoming people from abroad. They are very welcoming. I think they have received me very well. I had no problem fitting into the way they work… I didn’t have many problems to adapt, I think because again, it’s certainly a very international city. I feel that I am in a more international place, than a Dutch place, to be honest.”

Despite his expectations, Yago has had no problems with the language or the weather. “I didn’t have any problems with the language because they always speak English at work and where I live. Everyone speaks English here, everywhere I go” Yago explained. “My expectation was to come here and have… a lot of difficulties with the weather,” Yago said of the frigid weather. But much to his surprise, Yago actually felt much different once he experienced it. “I’m enjoying this cold weather; it’s nice. So it’s fun to do winter things here. You can have a lot of fun here in the winter.”

Yago believes that his relocation has had a big impact on his professional success and personal improvement. “It affected me a lot because I left my comfort zone, so I became more independent, personally and professionally. And technically, I have had a lot of new experience,” he explained. His language abilities have also improved as a result of the transfer, as this was his first assignment in which he spoke and wrote entirely in English. Yago also mentions that working with and learning from many different developers has also been very educational and rewarding.

Yago’s work-life balance has also improved significantly since his relocation to the Netherlands. Yago has discovered that the flexibility of hybrid working allows him to devote more time to goals and interests outside of work. “In my free time, I’m studying other stuff… I am able to take some time to study the Dutch language. I also get to do my personal stuff, to go out here and enjoy. I’m always trying to do it and have some time to study for certifications. I also have time to exercise; to go out to cycle a little bit, which is nice. I love it. I feel a good balance working with Wypoon,” he said.

Yago’s advises anyone considering moving abroad to just go for it. “You should not be afraid of changing you. If you want to experience, don’t be afraid, just be 100% decided and go for it. And if it’s winter, be prepared for the cold weather. But it’s, it’s awesome. I would say just go for it; don’t hesitate,” he said. Nevertheless, he advocates for being entirely dedicated to your decision: “You need to be 100% decided what you’re going to do, because you’re going to leave everything behind and  dive into this new experience. I decided to put in my mind that’s what I wanted, and I went for it without a hesitation because I was 100% decided.”

Overall, Yago has found this experience to be incredibly fulfilling, and he would like to stay in the Netherlands indefinitely. “I’m falling in love with it”, Yago says of the Netherlands. “Every day I still have this feeling when I go out, like, “Oh, everything is so beautiful.” I’ve been here for like eight or nine months, and I still have this feeling just like when I arrived here, like falling in love with everything… I love everything.”
